Drinking your greens can usually go one of two ways — committing to embracing veggie flavors from the get go, or throwing everything possible in the blender/juicer to cover them up. This smoothie somehow manages to strike a balance between the two. The inspiration comes from a local spot that primarily services farmers’ markets in the Bay Area, but ever since Native Juice Co closed its SF location that was on my walk to work, I’ve been missing this refreshing — and just a slight touch decadent — start to my day. I’m still refining the ratios to get that perfect vibrant green, but the taste is spot on.

What you’ll need:

 

Piña Kale-ada Smoothie

Banana, coconut, pineapple, and kale can all be dominant flavors, but when you get them all together like this, no single one should stand out. Plus, if you close your eyes, you might just think you're on a beach somewhere. Be sure to use a blender that can stand up to the challenge of blending kale; we actually used this recipe when we were searching for the best blenders because the raw greens can trip up lesser mixers.

Total Time:

Yield: 2-3 smoothies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of kale (can add more if you're up for it!)
  • 1 1/2 cup coconut water
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 1 1/2 cup pineapple
  • 1 banana
  • Ice to blend

Instructions:

  • Blend ingredients together. If you need more liquid, slowly add more coconut water.
